        VARIVAS and Eizo Maruhashi:

        The fateful encounter between the two launches VARIVAS onto the world stage.

        the impact of the birth of VARIVAS

        The history of Japanese big-game fishing began in the 1980s with two co-incidents.

        Incident # 1: VARIVAS Fishing Line is introduced in 1980

        In 1980, Morris Company Limited, based in Japan, introduced their VARIVAS brand of fishing line–the first IGFA-class fishing line made in Japan. The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) is a leading organization that publishes standardized big-game fishing rules, including strict rules on types of tackle and fishing line strength used in tournament game fishing, and certifies world records in big-game fishing.

        Prior to 1980, many countries produced fishing line that met IGFA standards. None, however, was made in Japan. This changed in 1980 with the introduction of VARIVAS. For the first time in the world of game fishing, a world-class fishing line, made-in-Japan, was born.

        At the same time in Japan, in the early 1980s, sports fishing anglers were beginning to take interest in sophisticated product designs of world-class fishing lines. Additionally, the launch of packaged 100m and 200m fishing line became a hot product in Japan.

        Eizo Maruhashi, Japan’a leading saltwater fly fishing angler, took a keen interest in this news. Maruhashi was surprised and excited, “There’s now an IGFA-standard line in Japan?!”

        Four years later another big incident occured.

        Incident #2: The First Japanese IGFA World Record

        In June 1984, Eizo Maruhashi, caught a world record, 78 lb. (35.4 kg) Giant Trevally (GT / Ronin’s Horse Mackerel) on Christmas Island in Australia, using VARIVAS 16 lb. (No. 4) fishing line. By catching a huge fish five times as heavy as the 16 lb. rated VARIVAS line he used, Maruhashi became Japan’s first IGFA world record holder.

        Saltwater fishing fans in Japan were thrilled at the news of Maruhashi’s world record feat. Anglers in Japan were now learning about the world of big-game fishing for the first time. As an evangelist of the fishing line system based on the IGFA rules, Maruhashi helped introduce Japanese anglers to not only a new type of game fishing, but to new fishing techniques and a new standard of fishing equipment.

        The VARIVAS brand quickly became synonymous with Maruhashi. Both had the strength to catch a 78 pounder on 16 lb (No. 4) line.  Maruhashi and VARIVAS, both from Japan, were recognized as world record holders. The VARIVAS brand reputation spread steadily among anglers who longed to replicate Maruhashi’s feat and admired his devotion to the world of big game fishing.

        Following Maruhashi’s record in 1984, usage of  VARIVAS products among leading anglers increased.
        Tadashi Koike, who pioneered the new territory of Herabuna Carp, was dubbed the “Fishing Deus.”
        Satoshi Minagawa, became a legend in trout fishing.
        Satoshi Harada popularized both onshore sea bass and offshore Dolphinfish games on the Shonan coast and helped introduce VARIVAS PE Line to the world. Fumio Suzuki, is a pioneer in the unprecedented area of fishing for GT using lures with PE line.
        With each pioneer in these new genres, VARIVAS line and gear was always beside them.  Because this high quality fishing line routinely performs with trusted strength, Morris Company’s VARIVAS Fishing Line has become the brand used most by Japanese anglers.
